Alan Tollefson

Name: Alan Tollefson
Birth Name:
Alan R. Tollefson II

After MHS I: Went into the U.S. Air Force, spent time in Texas, Illinois, 1.5 years in Biloxi, Mississippi & 2 years in Wiesbaden, Germany. I got out of my regular Air Force job to Downhill race for the Air Force in Germany. My squadron commander didn’t like me going on all the ski trips I “had” to go on so I could train and would always give me a hard time. He finally realized that if he didn’t let me go, the captain of our ski team would be in his office in a heart beat. One day he actually said to me, “I don’t like you going on all these ski trips, but I really don’t have a choice do I.” I said, “With all due respect sir, no you don’t.”  The captain of our ski team was second in command of our base, a full bird colonel. After the Air Force, I worked at Old’s Dry Goods in Excelsior for one year. I then started working with my father & 2 partners in 1989 in the Advertising/Marketing business. That lasted until 1994, the business I worked for, the one my father became involved in as a business investment wasn’t going in the direction he had hoped. He got out and continued with his full time business which he has been self employed over the last 42+ years. I left, got a job at an Advertising agency in Edina called Ad Partners & worked there for 5+ years. I was freelancing on the side while working there. Then in October, 1999, a freelance client of mine asked me to put together a proposal to manage his entire web site, add his products for sale, full e-commerce stuff and manage an e-newsletter. On Oct. 14th 1999, he called me at work and said, “If I accept this proposal, will this allow you to start your own business.” I said, “Yes, it will.” He said, “OK, I’ll accept the proposal.”  I left Ad Partners on Oct. 28th, 1999, Started my own Web Site - Consulting, Development, Maintenance & Management business, took two of their clients with me and I have been self employed ever since.

Update: Things slowed down with all of my clients and as of August 2005, I am not self-employed. I am now working full time at Focus Technology in Chanhassen, MN. We sell computer servers and IT networking hardware. I am the Web Marketing Manager and Operations Manager. I still have my Tollefson Design business and I am working on several online businesses.

While at MHS, I would have loved to have had a date with (or been noticed by): There are too many to pick from.

Most Embarrassing High School memory is: Someone will have to remind me because I can’t think of one.

Most exciting thing I’ve done since I left MHS: Finished 3rd overall in Alpine skiing (Slalom, GS, SG & Downhill) between the Army & Air Force for all of Europe, Driving 130 mph on the autobahn in Germany, In 1997 I completed the Walt Disney World marathon - ran it as a fund raiser for Leukemia. I had to raise $2000 just to go. I have completed 9 NorthShore inline skating marathons - best time 1:21:18, 10th will be this Sept. 13th, 2008, Skiing at Zermatt, Switzerland.

Farthest away from MHS: Out of Germany, Switzerland, Italy, France, Austria & Yugoslavia, I believe Yugoslavia would be the farthest.

Most bizarre place I’ve run into an old classmate: I’ve run into a few, nowhere bizarre. Not bizarre, but ran into John McGinty at the 2002 NorthShore Inline Marathon.

Best friend while at MHS: I had many friends but tops were John Gray & Tom Klouda

The most meaningful moment I have had since MHS: The day I got married to Deb.

I now reside in: A contemporary home which has one master bedroom, one HUGE walk in closet for my wife, 2 offices, a dog room and a little space fur, I mean for us to relax. Our home is in Maple Grove, MN, that was the boonies when I was young.

Here’s what I do on a daily basis: Wake up, go to work, come home, work more, sleep, try to inline skate or exercise, repeat.

I have kids?: Nothing human, 3 dogs, 2 cats, 2 birds.

I am married?: Happily, Since Dec. 28th, 1991

Spouse/Partner: Deborah from Richfield.

I’ve learned since high school:  that the little groups (cliques) people get into while in high school are so worthless. If I knew in High School, what I know now, I would have been friends with every single person I could.

What I would like to go down in history for: Inventing something that helps the World.
