Name: Kevin Roberg-Perez Birth Name: Kevin Roberg
After MHS I: I attended the U of M (Genetics and Cell Biology (BS), Italian BA) and MIT (Biology, PhD). While at the ‘U’ I spent a year in Bologna, Italy. While at MIT I met my future wife (Sherry) and spent 6 years negotiating a last name. We moved to Pasadena for postdoctoral work and after a year I left Caltech and joined a start up bioinformatics company (Proteome Inc.) where I directed a database development group. We grew to 120 employees and were acquired by a large genomics company. Two years ago Sherry and I decided to come back to Minnesota so she could start law school while we started a family (free in-house day care from my sisters and mom can’t be beat). Since then I’ve been back at the U working with faculty in the Cancer Center on various bioinformatics projects.
Most exciting thing I’ve done since I left MHS: Experienced the lights going down at 40+ Grateful Dead shows.
Farthest away from MHS: Guam (where my wife is from)
Most bizarre place I’ve run into an old classmate: 1987: My mother’s kitchen: Lisa Bevan (my sister and her brother were dating) 1989 Grateful Dead show in Milwaukee: Phil Lein and Brian Jakel. 1990 Border Café in Harvard Square: Peter LeVert 1993 Yeast Cell Biology Conference: Steve Ogg
The most meaningful moment I have had since MHS: Being married, the birth of my son, caring for my dying grandfather, and being with my grandmother when she passed away (not always the most fun but the most important).
I now reside in: Northeast Minneapolis
Here’s what I do on a daily basis: Study genomes or develop tools to do so.
I have kids?: Oliver (16 months) is obsessed with balls and light bulbs.
I am married?: yes
Spouse/Partner: Sherry Roberg-Perez: she is soon to start her 2nd year of law school with Mike Hanson and Duncan Clybourne’s wife Johanna at St Thomas.
I’ve learned since high school: Just about everything I’ve learned, I’ve learned since high school. My performance at MHS is proof of that!
